Linux rising to the top?
By Joe D'Angelo on Oct 26, 2009 | In Linux
As I sit here copying some of the old blogs to this new page I can't help but notice how far Linux has come in just the past two years. Some of the difficult issues I had are now gone completely. Others are still there, but much less bothersome. I had posted a blog about things moving too fast, but I have to admit if they were.'t moving this fast Linux might not yet be a real contender as a primary OS. That seems to be changing quickly. I can easily see Linux rising to the top in the future. If that sounds a bit over optimistic to you, oh well. I really see the main operating system used by most people today needing to get on the ball. I know there was a new release and it is said to show promise. I just don't know if it will be too little too late or if Linux is going to be the long shot at the horse race that no one thought would finish first. Just wishful thinking? Maybe. Only time will tell. That it for now. As always, Happy Linuxing!

Gnome version of fedora core 8
By Joe D'Angelo on Apr 11, 2008 | In Linux
Well, where to start. I installed the Gnome version of fedora core 8 just to tinker a bit. OK you are now scratching your head and wondering “What is fedora? It's another flavor of Linux. It worked very well. Some of the inner workings were a bit different, but that's why they are called flavors. I liked it very much. If you do not like openSUSE (for the life of me I don't know why) or you have not yet tried Linux this a great alternative to Windows. Hay look I have no beef with Microsoft, it's just that I can't afford the price. I have 4 computers in my house and all but 1 has openSUSE on it. The cost of 1 copy of XP was $100.00 and that was an upgrade... The fact that Vista is a complete flop is beside the point. Microsoft needs to come down on their price or there will be a new influx of Linux users. And don't even get started on all the extra software you need to buy just to get things done. Sure there are pre-installed systems but you would be surprised as to how many are try before you buy versions. Here is a link to some software titles that can replace the Windows versions and in some cases there are Windows version too so you can dual boot if you like. http://www.linuxrsp.ru/win-lin-soft/table-eng.html this link is a bit out of date but I think you will get the idea... I'm going to try Ubuntu next and will write what I think of that flavor. I'm sure it's nice too.
Oh by the way I found out why totem will not work any more. Simple answer... It's setup to use gstreamer as the back end now. How to switch it back? I have not gotten there yet. I will post a work around as soon I figure it out. If you know one please write to me. wolfspider@bigfoot.com It will work for incrypted DVDs if you use the xine back end and have the correct codecs installed.
